Too tricky/delicate for young, impatient children to buildI bought this as a gift for a college junior – and he loved putting it together – but even for someone this old/patient/careful, he had to backtrack and reassemble a few times, and a few delicate pieces broke because the wood is very thin, and some pieces take a bit of forcing to properly put into place. He had to return to school before he finished, but it was fun to see the marbles run up to the point where he stopped. (He’ll finish on his next school break.)

DifficultDid this with my college age son when he was home. We love 3D puzzles & large adult lego sets, etc. This set is very cool looking & we did get most of it working but several pieces broke & in the end it wasn’t fully functional. We watched videos on YouTube & spent several days working on it. Would have been really cool if the pieces fit together more easily.

11/12/22I’ve had this sitting on my kitchen counter for about 10 months now. It’s been a conversation piece and it’s been enjoyed all that time so it’s was definitely worth the hard work and time it took to build it. My wife even enjoys it being there. Kids seem to enjoy it the most and marvel at how it works.However, one energetic kid was a bit too forceful with it and broke off the handle. For longevity, you need to tell everyone to be easy on it and not force things since gear meshing etc can momentarily bind.FYI The handle attachment is a weak link which breaks before other more complicated pieces break. It is easily fixed by gluing a patch piece of plywood over the broken area.Original reviewI like the way this kit turned out a lot. The pieces are of high quality and fit together nicely. It’s a lot above average in difficulty and you’ll need persistence to put it together. Also there are a few areas that need tuning that I describe in my video. But once it’s tuned it works great. To summarize, you’ll need to a) add a guard rail to stop the ball bearings from occasionally exiting the spiral. You can use the left over original plywood cut out. Just find a 5” diameter guide pieces (I used 8mm film can) and use it to cut the outside diameter of the spiral. b) put a plywood wedge with 45 angle under one drop hole (finger points to location in photo) to kick the bearings forward and keep it moving c) add the correct number of spacer rings so the bearing drop freely between the plastic pieces and d) adjust the play in the flip-flop so it alternates properly. Mine works very well and people really like it as do I.

Set reasonable expectationsBought as gift for 11 yr old granddaughter. She did well with lower complexity subassemblies but needed help with the more complex subassemblies and final assembly. She broke a few parts which I was able to repair with wood glue. Kit was missing a couple of parts but we were able to work around it. After final assembly, I exercised the unit extensively to find the weak points and made several adjustments with glue and toothpicks to get reliable and consistent performance. Overall, she and I had a great time working together and she now has a unique item in her room she can enjoy and share with others.
